As a high school student, Neema Baddam, a high school freshman, knew when schools closed due to the COVID-19 outbreak that many students would also be losing a vital food source.
“I have access to food at home, but I know that is a luxury that not everyone has,” Baddam said. “I knew it would have a greater toll on people and decided I wanted to start helping.”
Through her mom, who works in the Flint area, Neema connected with Connie Peters at the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan and worked with the Food Bank staff to create an online fundraiser.
Neema set up a “team” page and shared the link with friends and acquaintances. In less than 24 hours, her fundraiser raised nearly $1,000 – enough for the Food Bank to provide approximately 6,000 meals for people in need.
“I was happy and surprised that we raised so much so quickly,” Neema said.
Neema’s goal is to raise $5,000 for the Food Bank, which would provide 30,000 meals. Contributions to her fundraising team page can be made here.
