The Food Bank of Eastern Michigan hosted members of the Michigan House Democratic Caucus for their third annual Julie Plawecki Day of Service on June 15.
The event honors Plawecki, who represented Michigan’s 11th district until her death in 2016. Each year since, members of the House Democratic Caucus have engaged in service projects in Michigan in her honor. This year, they will be partnering with the Food Bank to pack Summer Nutrition Bags – which include breakfast, lunch, and snack items – for the Food Bank’s Summer Feeding Program.
“The Michigan House Democrats are proud to participate in this day of service honoring Rep. Julie Plawecki,” said House Democratic Leader Christine Greig. “Rep. Plawecki was truly a model public servant and her devotion to bettering her community is matched by few. On this day, we honor her by giving back to the community of Flint and try to emulate her selflessness by participating in the Summer Feeding Program.”
“I was inspired to organize the House Democratic Caucus service day, because I knew how important volunteering was to Rep. Plawecki” said Rep. Cara Clemente (D – Lincoln Park). “This is the third one that we have hosted, and they have grown each year.”
The Food Bank of Eastern Michigan’s Summer Feeding Program fills the gap for kids who rely on free and reduced price school lunches during the school year. The Food Bank has more than 60 summer feeding sites throughout Genesee, Gladwin, Saginaw, and Lapeer counties, including 14 mobile trucks that distribute food directly to children at housing complexes, churches, and schoolyards. The Nutrition Bags are handed out to kids to provide food over weekends.
“This summer, we will distribute approximately 11,000 nutrition bags for children to take home with them,” said Kara Ross, President and CEO of the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan. “Volunteers are vital to our ability to provide hunger-fighting services throughout eastern Michigan. We are grateful for the support of the Michigan House Democratic Caucus as we kickoff our Summer Feeding Program.”
