As the end of the school year approached, many teachers and students were filled with anticipation of the long, care-free summer days to come. No more classes. No more homework. No more tests. But for many students, the end of school also signaled the end to guaranteed meals on a regular basis. In Michigan, over 421,000 children receive free or reduced-price meals through the National School Lunch and Breakfast Programs (NSLP and NSBP). During the summer, those same children frequently miss daytime meals because their caregivers are unable to provide the ingredients. This summer, the Food Bank partnered with 55 feeding sites throughout Flint and Saginaw to help keep these young individuals nourished and healthy. As a sponsor of the USDA’s Summer Food Service Program (SFSP), the Food Bank was able to distribute over 94,000 meals through daily deliveries to each location during the summer of 2007.
