Nationally one out of every twelve children goes to bed hungry every night. The Food Bank of Eastern Michigan has developed a Hunger Education Program to help students understand the consequences of hunger and to empower them to make a difference in their community. Children and youth have an amazing capacity to learn, process and share new concepts and ideas amongst their peers and others. This program targets children and youth about the existence and manifestation of local hunger and it focuses on breaking down stereotypes and other common myths associated with hunger. The Hunger Education Program, a unique outreach service in the Greater Flint Community, incorporates innovative methods of teaching. It has been extremely successful due to the ability to easily integrate hunger education activities with existing school programs. The Food Bank’s Hunger Education Program also encompasses the importance of philanthropy and the basic ideology of community support. Children need to establish an early understanding of hunger as it exists locally, nationally, and globally so they can help battle the war. Hunger education will also embrace children’s acceptance of others regardless of socioeconomic status.
