Act now to Keep the Budget Ax in Lansing from Hurting those in Need..

We all know the citizens of Michigan have been hit with some very difficult times.  Unemployment is highest in the nation, affecting not just the people of the state but also the state revenue stream.  In order to balance the state budget, our legislators are making some very difficult decisions regarding program cuts.  One such cut that has already been approved by the Senate is to the Food Banks' MASS program (Michigan Agricultural Surplus System).  This funding is critical to all food banks in the state including the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan, as it provides resources that allow us to take state grown produce, process it, and distribute it through our agency network.

If you received potatoes, onions, carrots, or any other type of produce in the past year, your agency and clients have benefited from the 6 million pounds of produce provided by MASS funding.  Please take 5 minutes of your time today and contact your legislator Click Here  to express how it is imperative that the state
House of Representatives restore this funding in the House version of the appropriations bill. It is important that our legislators realize what a negative impact the decision to cut the MASS program would have on those who already have very few resources to provide food to their families.
